Devotion One:  Created to hunger!

By
Tammy A. Nischan

Hunger is a normal daily physical sensation.  Most physicians actually say that we can only live 4 to 6 weeks without food.  The human body has been created to require regular nourishment just as animals have been created to hunt for food on a regular basis.  This aspect of our lives can be very humbling as we learn that in order to eat we must have the means to purchase our food.  Unlike animals, we cannot roam around in the woods seeking a warm breakfast!  The mission of the food pantry is to literally provide you with food so that you can have one less worry in this very troubled world.

There is one huge difference, though, between our created needs and those of an animal.  We were created with a mind and spirit that is capable of so much more than simply surviving in this world.  God created us with the ability to love Him.  He created us with a soul that longs to be filled by something more than this world can offer.  We hear so much about the drug problems in our world, about the damaging effects of alcoholism, about the rising rate of divorce within our families.  I believe that all of these situations can be traced back to a hungry soul that is longing for Christ but has not yet found Him.  The Bible says “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst after righteousness!”  Wow!  That is beautiful to me.  Not only has God created us to hunger and thirst for food, but He has created us to hunger and thirst for Him!

Think about this:

You know it is important to feed your family; because you, too, feel hunger and know you must eat to live.  How much more important is the eternity of your family’s souls?  How much more important is your soul?  Do you make an effort to feed yourself spiritually?

The good news is this:

First Church of Christ wants to feed you physically and spiritually!  We want to become your brothers and sisters in Christ!  Please consider tasting our spiritual food by joining us on Sunday mornings at 9:30 for Sunday school and 10:30 for worship.  Do not feel pressured about how you dress.  We have people in attendance wearing everything from dress clothes to jeans!  God does not look at the outward appearance, God looks at the heart!  We strive to be like Him!

We promise that you will leave agreeing with Psalm 34:8 that says,

“Taste and see that the LORD is good; blessed is the man who takes refuge in him.”
