girdwood1.jpgCan you find Gambia on a world map?  It is only 30 miles wide and about 200 miles long, about one tenth the size of the state of Kentucky.  Its land includes a few miles on each side of the river Gambia.  The tiniest country in Africa is surrounded by only one neighbor—Senegal.  With one Atlantic seaport tourism and the export of peanuts are its primary products.

We want to notice Gambia this morning because of the reforms its president Yahyah made by rooting out much corruption.  On a recent tour one visitor was surprised to find that there was no “tip” accepted by the people handling his baggage.  “No, sir, we are paid a salary for our work here.  We do not accept other money.”

Did President Yayah learn the honesty he promotes in his homeland as a boy?  Did he learn this from his military training there?  Did he learn this from his training at the Military Police Officers Basic Course at Port McClellan, Alabama, USA?  Is this honesty why he was chosen as Officer in charge of close protection of visiting heads of state?

Perhaps this was why he was appointed Honorary Citizen of the state of Georgia, USA, in 1993; or Honorary Lt. Col. ADC, Alabama State Military, USA, the following year; or Honorary Admiral, Alabama State Navy by the Governor of the State of Alabama in 1998; or 16 other high honors from Africa, Canada, China, Libya, Liberia, England, Senegal, and the USA.

The citizens of Gambia are pleased that they chose him to be their president in 1996.

We want you to know about another leader who rose from a tiny little country and made major improvements—King Jesus.  You will be glad you made him your primary leader.

Your friend in Christ,
Jim Girdwood
Your Interim Minister
